Lifelong Learning

Continuous learning is essential to everyday living, and Mr Lim is a perfect example. Despite being over 80 years old, he continued to seek development in learning Chinese at the Chung Wah CC Willetton Hub. He consistently practised every Chinese word, each stroke of the characters, the word's meaning and pronunciation. After learning the characters, he forms short sentences and practices them with the staff at the community hub.

Drifting back in time, Mr Lim was born and raised in Malaysia. He's proficient in English and a bit of Malay but less so in the Chinese language. Before retirement, Mr Lim was a healthcare professional. During the mid-1980s, care services were in high demand, which enabled him to secure a job and move to Australia with his family. Mr Lim's English proficiency has helped him to quickly adapt to the new life in Australia. However, learning Chinese and its culture has always been his personal goal.

Chung Wah Community Care provides culturally appropriate care and services. With Mrs Lim's encouragement, the couple quickly joined events and activities at our Willetton Community Hub. As a result, Chung Wah CC has provided the couple with a platform to expand their social network and participate in many centre activities.

"Pursuing knowledge and lifelong learning to keep me updated is important to me." — Mr Lim

Mr Lim believes the secret to staying young is never to stop learning. As a result, he always feels energised and engaged. Mr Lim also maintains good health by consistently doing brisk walks daily. Mrs Lim sometimes thinks her husband is a little stubborn as he often says, "To live, one must continue moving. It's easier to develop brain degenerative disease once you stop learning". To a certain extent, his worries are valid, and as they say, "You either use it or lose it".

The couple thanks everyone at Chung Wah CC for their professional care and our work in providing seniors like Mr Lim a platform to meet like-minded people who seek continuous learning. He is a role model for many of our seniors at Chung Wah CC. Here at Chung Wah CC, knowledge can help keeps the brain active and bring significant confidence in one's life.
